Philanthropic Pixels
1. What is the idea?
The idea is simple: to take part in philanthropic activities by selling 1,000,000 pixels for HK$1 each. After each and every one of the pixels have been sold, 50% of the proceeds generated by this site will be donated to various charities (a poll will be taken to decide which charity the proceeds will go to).
Everyone is welcome to buy my pixels, which are available in 100 pixel 'lots' (each measuring 10 x 10 pixels – this is equivalent to one of the white squares on the grid). You will see the homepage is divided into 10,000 of these 100 pixel blocks (hence there are 1,000,000 pixels in total). The reason for selling them in 100 pixel ‘lots’ is because anything smaller would be too small to display anything meaningful.
You can buy as many pixels as you like, as long as there are some available (live stats will be available on the homepage). When you place an order for some pixels, you can then display an image/ad/logo of your choice in the next available space surrounding an already purchased ‘lot’. You can also have the image click through to your own website. However, no obscene or offensive images will be allowed.
2. Who are you?
My name is Rami El-Ashi, I'm 25 years old and I live in Hong Kong. My goal is to become a philanthropist, and I want to bring you along with me.
3. What will you do with the money?
Let us not forget that the base of this site is ‘Philanthropy’. 50% of this site’s proceeds will be donated to different charities as soon as all pixels have been sold. How much money are we talking about here? I will let you do the math.
As for the remaining 50%: it will be used to invest in future projects, advertising & expansion when the time comes.
4. Why should I buy your pixels?
Because you will have an image and a link to your site on the homepage of a site that could potentially be seen by millions of people over the coming years. It will give your site/business a good name in the sense that you are donating to a charity with every pixel you purchase. The site will be online for as long as blogger.com/domain exists, that's guaranteed, but the idea is to keep it online forever. So you really could own a piece of 'internet history'!
5. Why can't I buy one single pixel (e.g. 1 x 1 pixel)?
Although it would probably be nice if individuals could be part of philanthropic activities by buying a single pixel each, but in practice, it would not be so effective. This is because you cannot display anything meaningful in one pixel - nor click it easily - so visually, it would be pointless.
The site would appeal more to people with businesses/websites to advertise, than it would to individuals, or to put it more accurately, businesses would find it more meaningful to have a full sized graphic on the homepage. Hence the minimum purchase is HK$100 - a 10 x 10 pixel block.
However! If you really want to own a single pixel, there is always the option of clubbing together with your friends/family/colleauges and buying a 10 x 10 pixel block together! This means you won’t necessarily have to have a link, you could simply write something meaningful.
6. How long will the site be online?
The site is guaranteed to be online for as long as blogger.com exists. However, the site may move to its own domain shortly after orders have been placed.
The idea is to create something of an internet time capsule: a homepage that is unique and permanent. Everything on the internet keeps changing so fast, it would be nice to have something that stays solid and permanent for many years to come. You can be a part of that!
7. What does the future look like for ‘Philanthropic Pixels’?
Hopefully very bright! An idea in the pipeline is to create different phases of the project. Although this seems very far fetched, I would like to keep it in mind. So, once the first 1,000,000 pixels are sold, we could work together to start helping more and more people with our donations.
Another idea would be to create a 1,000 piece limited edition exclusive poster of the final million pixel digital masterpiece (100 of which will be large in size and numbered to show their exclusivity, the remaining 900 will be standard photo prints), and sell them (hopefully to our investors) to once again give 50% of the proceeds to charity. Please take a look above for a glimpse of what the grid will look like when it has been completed.
So lets get started, and see how much we can help!
